MAKING RIGHT CHOICES

Making choices is an important part of human being. Whether that choice is good or bad, it is inevitable for us as human to live without making choices. Even when it looks like one is silent and seemingly indecisive, choices may have been made because indecision itself is a choice. This is very important, this matter of making the correct choices in life. However, you know, you don't CHOOSE whether you come into the world or not; that is God's choice. You did not choose to be born; God did not ask you or me if we wanted to come into this world. He didn't ask us about WHERE we were to be born, or whether we WANTED to be born, or WHEN we wanted to be born, or anything of the sort. So, coming into the world and being alive is not our choice. That was the LORD'S. The Bible says that the Lord "giveth;" that is, He gives LIFE. And the Lord "taketh away;" He takes away life. So, you see, this business of being in the world was not our choice; it was the choice of the Lord, for He is the One who gives life. But, being in this world, we do have choices to make. However, the choice one makes ultimately determines the kind of life he/she lives. Our choices in life contribute to what becomes of us. I dare to challenge you to make the right choice.
I. CHOICES WHICH GREATLY AFFECT OUR LIVES
 A. CHOOSING JESUS...
Will you follow Jesus or not? Will you become His disciple? Or will you refuse to accept His gracious offer of salvation - Mt 11:28-30
This one decision will affect your life more than any other! It will determine your place in eternity,it will have a bearing on every other decision you make. As a disciple, you will be concerned with doing His will and you will not simply "do your own thing"
 B. CHOOSING A CAREER...
Even from a worldly viewpoint, your choice is important. The job market is always changing.  The wrong choice could lead to financial ruin or fiscal hardship. More importantly, the choice can have a lasting effect on: Your marriage and family or even onyour service to God.
If you make the choice to honour God first, and you will be blessed- Mt 6:33. But if you make money the primary factor in your decision and destruction will follow - 1Tim. 6:9-10
 C. CHOOSING A MATE...
This choice will determine to a great extent your degree of happiness –Pro.12:4.It will have a permanent bearing on your children and their emotional well-being, You may think you can simply divorce a person if they turn out to be a bad choicebut once you have children, there is no way to reverse the choice you made as to who is the mother or father of your children! The children are not unaffected by the violence of divorce - cf.Mal 2:15 - 16
 D. CHOOSING YOUR FRIENDS...
Having close friends can be a wonderful blessing - cf. Pro 17:17.  But the wrong friends can be a curse - cf. Pro 12:26; 1Cor 15:33
 E. CHOOSING WHERE TO LIVE...
It was this choice where Lot made his mistake. It appeared to be a sound business decision - Gen 13:10-11 But it was a poor moral decision - Gen 13:13 . Upon what basis do we choose where to live? Is it based solely on how much of house we can afford? Is it based upon the location to work, school, etc.? Do we consider whether it will help or hinder our service to God and His church? There may be some modern-day "Sodom" and "Gomorrah" to avoid!
[For every action there is a reaction, and for every choice there is a consequence.  To increase the likelihood that our choices will have good consequences, here are a few...]
II. SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING WISE CHOICES
A. ASK GOD FOR WISDOM...
      1. He promises to give wisdom to those who ask in faith - Jms 1:5-8
      2. Asking for wisdom requires diligence -Pro 2:1-9
-- Fill your prayers with requests for wisdom to make wise choices!
 B. ASK OTHERS FOR ADVICE...
      1. There is safety in having many counsellors - Pro 11:14
      2. There is wisdom in heeding the counsel of others - Pro 12:15
      3. Two great sources for counsel:
         a. The Bible itself, especially a book like Proverbs
         b. Older, mature Christians
-- Don't hesitate to ask others what they would do!

 C. COMMIT YOUR CHOICES TO THE LORD...
      1. Trusting that you have made choices pleasing to Him, put them in His hands - Ps 37:5-6, 23-26
      2. Make your choices with the understanding, "if the Lord wills" - Jms 4:13-15
      3. One might even ask the Lord that if a choice is not according to His will...
         a. He might frustrate the carrying out of the choice
         b. Or to otherwise show you what is His will
Include God in your decision making, if you wish to make wise choices!
[There will be times when it becomes apparent that we made poor choices, even wrong ones.  What can we do to avoid making matters worse...?]
III. RESPONDING TO WRONG CHOICES
 A. LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS...
      1. Do what Lot did:  Heed and flee!
         a. Heed the Word of God
         b. Do what you now know to be right without reservation (remember Lot's wife!)
      2. Do what Peter did:  Repent and serve!
         a. Repent, if sin is involved (as when Peter denied Christ)
         b. Serve the Lord with what time you have left in this life
      3. Do what Paul did:  Accept and live!
         a. Accept the forgiveness Jesus provides - cf. 1Tim 1:12-16
         b. Determine to live for the Lord to the best of your ability - cf. Php 3:13-14
  B. THE WRONG THING TO DO...
      1. Continue - remain in the choice you've made because of pride, or some other reason!
      2. Wallow - just feel sorry for yourself over your guilt or loss!

A NEW NAME: A CROWN OF GLORY (Isaiah 62:3-4)

1.‘Crown of glory’ here implies that your living and lifestyle will bring glory, honour and splendour to the Lord.
2.    We will be unto the Lord, a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation......
1 Peter 2:9
In Malachi 3:17, the Lord said the righteous will be His own special treasure
(jewels), even in the time of judgment.

3.    Crown and diadem signify royalty (kingship).
He has made us kings and priests unto God...... (Rev. 1:6; 5:10)
You shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord......a royal diadem in the
hand of your God.....
Just the same way a King will not allow his crown to be used, trampled upon or
taken away, the Lord will keep, cherish and protect you...
Zech 9:16 – you will be lifted up as an ensign (an ensign is a symbol, flag,
standard, a sign and a wonder....)

4.    You shall no longer be termed ‘Forsaken’... (Psalm 74:9)
A forsaken land (life) is one which lacks the light (life) of God....
Where there is no vision (or revelation), people perish (cast off restraint)Prov. 29:18
Henceforth, you shall no longer be forsaken, in the name of Jesus Christ!

...Neither shall your land any more be termed ‘Desolate’
‘Desolate’ implies bareness. It signifies lack of fruitfulness (non-productivity).
Isaiah 54:1
Henceforth, the yoke of bareness is broken in your life, in the name of Jesus Christ! (Isaiah 10:27)
You shall be called ‘Hephzibah’ – ‘My delight is in her’
Your land shall be called ‘Beulah’ – ‘Married’

BECOMING A CROWN OF BEAUTY/HONOUR IN THE LORD’S HAND

1. LOVE

Love the Lord your God and showcase the love through your obedience to His

commandments (John 14:15, 21-23).

Show the love of God to your neighbour (John 14:34-35)

On these two commandments hang the all the law and the prophets (Matt 22:40)

2. HUMILITY

If you must be a worthy vessel in the hand of the Master, if you will command

great exploits for the Kingdom of God, you must humble yourself before God (Prov.29:23, Luke 14:11, Matt 23:12; James 4:10).

Moses commanded great exploit, yet he was referred to as the meekest man in the

face of the earth (Numbers 12:3).

3. INTEGRITY
Integrity occurs when your ‘good works’ align with your ‘good thoughts’.

David said ‘let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart...’ (Psalm

19:14, Prov. 11:3, 20:7)

4. HOLINESS
Someone defined holiness as ‘becoming like Jesus’.

Holiness implies being set apart (consecrated). It implies perfection (striving

towards perfection) before God (Matt 5:48; 1 Peter 1:16).

Holiness is being a true representative/ambassador of Christ when no one is

watching.

5. DWELLING IN HIS PRESENCE (Psalm 65:4-5; Psalm 91:1)

People who cherish the presence of the Lord will always manifest His glory. Their

lives will always reflect the glory of the Lord.

(Abraham, Joseph, David, etc)

Overcoming the adversary( Revelation 12:7-11)

There is only one adversary (enemy) for the saints of God and that is the devil.
1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour
It’s important for us to note that the Christian race is a warfare.
The Bible enjoined us to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). We were also charged to contend for the faith that was once for all, entrusted to God’s people (Jude 3).
Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11).

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12).
The main agenda of the devil is to ensure that we don’t finish our race in Christ. Therefore, let’s be watchful, diligent and prayerful in order to ensure that we fulfil God’s purpose for our lives.
A victorious Christian is one who finishes strong! We will finish strong in the name of Jesus Christ...
The devil is the accuser of the brethren. He accuses them day and night before God; he appears before God as an adversary to the church of God (the people of God), he brings accusations against them, in the presence of God. E.g. Job, Joshua the high priest.
Though he hates the presence of God, yet he is willing to appear there to accuse the people of God.
We must take heed to ourselves, and we must not give the devil any cause of accusation against us;
However, when we have sinned, we must go in before the Lord, and accuse and condemn ourselves, and commit our cause to Christ as our Advocate.

How to overcome/How to secure victory
The Blood of the Lamb
Without shedding of blood, there is no remission....(Hebrews 9:3b)
"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil" - Hebrews 2:14
The Blood of Jesus is the token for our right standing before God. The Blood of the Lamb is the basis for our righteousness and the reason for our salvation.
Our righteousness, which is like a filthy rag, cannot give us access to the throne of grace; it is on the basis of the Blood of the Lamb, that we can have access to the presence of God.
In order to secure victory in life, we must continually plead the blood of Jesus.
Pleading the blood of Jesus also talks about building an effective prayer life and having a constant fellowship with the Lord.

The Blood of Jesus cleanses our spiritual garments and makes us blameless in the sight of God. The Blood of Jesus cleanses, heals and strengthens our conscience to do what is right in the sight of God.

The Word of our testimony
The Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit through which we secure victory against the adversary.
Remember, Jesus is the Word of God! (Rev 19:13, John 1:1)

Until the word of God becomes the word of our testimony, victory is not in view.
Our lives must reflect the Word. We must live by the Word. We must become doers of the Word. Moreover, we must draw personal revelation from the Word. It is at this point that the Word of God becomes our spiritual sword.
Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the Word of God.....the moment the Word of God (which we preach, teach or hear) produces faith in us or in others, a faithful testimony is being borne about Christ.
At this instance, victory is secured in Christ Jesus. (Whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world; this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith....).

Loving not our lives unto death (self denial)
Experiencing the power of the Cross
Experiencing death to self – losing interest in the cravings of the flesh...
He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal (John 12:25)
Bearing the testimony of Christ in the face of adversity and threats of death.
Not minding to lose our lives for the sake of God’s kingdom.
Identifying with the fellowship of Christ’s suffering.
E.g. The 4 lepers at the gate of Samaria, the 3 Hebrews (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego), Esther the queen
We will overcome in the name of Jesus Christ! May the Lord grant unto us, grace to finish strong...

POSSESSING YOUR POSSESSIONS IN CHRIST ( GALATIANS 4:1-7; OBADIAH 1:17)

Every child of God has possessions or spiritual blessings in heavenly places, which have been provided by Christ Jesus. Our possessions are our covenant rights which God has given to us, through His Son (Jesus Christ).
Your possession is your right, it’s your portion, and it’s your inheritance.
You can only possess what is yours by right. Every child of God has an inheritance in Christ.
These ‘possessions’ (spiritual blessings in heavenly places) are the exclusive rights of the people of God.
Through Jesus Christ, we become heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ.
God wants to groom us into the level of ‘sonship’ before bringing us into the total possession of our inheritance in Him.
(For as long as the heir to the throne is a child, he is still likened to a servant and cannot take full possession, even though he is potentially the lord of all...)
Obadiah 1:17 talks about the processes or steps that precede possession: Deliverance and Holiness.
The 4 Ps of Life (the processes that God uses to bring us into the place of destiny)
Promises
The promises of God are the bases of manifestation in the Kingdom of God.
Any manifestation of God’s power or testimony about God’s faithfulness must have been preceded by the promises of God.
God’s promises are His Words; His Word is His bond....Whatsoever He says automatically becomes binding, at the appointed time, it will come into fulfilment.
The promise(s) of God is/are the foundation for the building of our faith.
(Faith is an act or expression, motivated or inspired by the Word of God
...Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the Word of God)
What are the promises of God concerning your life? Begin to recall them and respond positively to them.
Visions, prophecies, revelations and other testimonies from men are at best, confirmation of what has been written (the Word).
However, receiving the promise does not guarantee the possession of one’s inheritance in Christ.
Principles
Principles are laws or rules that have to (must) be followed. They are fundamental doctrines or tenets which must be strictly adhered to.
Our God is a God of principles. His code of conducts must be duly followed.
After giving the promise, God wants to establish us in His doctrine – (way, belief, value system, etc).
If the Lord will be your Shepherd, you must know His principles.
We know about the principles of God through His Word (2 Tim. 3:16, Psalm 119:9)
His principles teach us how to flee from every appearance of evil.
His principles lead us on the narrow and lonely path, which leads to eternal life.
When we understand His principles, we crave for God, rather than mere ‘blessings’.
Understanding His principles sets our feet upon the Rock; we become established on the path of life and are no longer tossed around by every wind of doctrine.
Problems/Persecution
Problems are necessary refinery processes which we must pass through, on our way to fulfilling God’s purpose.
Note that God never promised us a hitch-free journey into eternal life.
The Bible confirmed that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22).
Tribulations and persecutions will arise for the sake of the Word (promise) that has been given to you (Matt 13:20-21).
Note that it’s a refinery process. It’s not your final destination, it’s only a passage.
Problems make us to reflect on our weaknesses and God’s strength is glorified in our weaknesses. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Problems pave the way for perfection (Hebrews 2:10; 5:8-9)
Possession

This is the point of taking full ownership of one’s inheritance (covenant rights) in Christ. It’s a process of restoration, whereby you retrieve what is rightfully yours, but hitherto had been unlawfully taken away from you.
David recovered all (1 Samuel 30); Psalm 126
However, God does not want us to be possessed by the things He blesses us with. He still wants to take absolute possession over our lives.
