John 15:9-13
Love is the essence of life. Without love, life
itself is meaningless. The greatest expression of God towards humanity is love
(Romans 5:8).
There is no way you can describe God outside love. God is love! (1 John 4:8).
But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law (Gal.
5:22-23).
The fruit of the Spirit is centred on the attribute of love. Without love, one
cannot operate in the fullness of God’s power.
Love never fails! Love never fades away! Love never
ceases! Prophecies will fail, tongues will cease, knowledge will pass away, but
love is ever abiding… (1 Cor. 13:8).
According to the illustration given by our Lord,
Jesus Christ in Matt. 25:31-46, love is the difference between the sheep and
the goats.
The love of God alienates you from the ways and
thought patterns of the world. You can’t love God and embrace the value systems
of the world (Matt. 6:24; James 4:4).
Everyone has some measure or degree of the
understanding of love (at least to a certain extent…). However, the question is
not whether you understand or possess love or not, but the question is, ‘Who is
the object of your love?’
For some folks, it’s their spouse, for some others,
their children, while some shower all their attention and affection on
themselves. Others will say it’s their career, business/means of livelihood,
ministry and many others…
God should be the centre point of our love life.
Jesus said to Peter, ‘Simon the son of Jonah, do you
love Me more than these? Feed My lambs/sheep’ (John 21:15-17). The love of God
constrains us to remain strictly focused on our God-given assignment.
‘Remember
from where you have fallen and repent and do the first works...’ (Revelation
2:4-5).
Any work that is not saturated in love is not acceptable before God (1
Cor. 13).
How
can I showcase the love of God?
Mark
12:28-34.
With all your heart (purpose) – Acts 11:23; Prov.
4:23
With all your soul (emotion) – Luke 1:46-47; Psalm 34:2; 103:1-2
With all your mind (intellect, understanding) – Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23
With all your might (strength, vigour, life, resources, time) – Eccl. 12:1
Shower that Godly love on your neighbour – Luke 10:25-37
